Clairol Professional, the iconic brand that, in the 1950s, transformed the way America looked at hair colour, is now available in Europe. Revived, refreshed and reformulated as a salon exclusive brand, Clairol Professional is an exciting newcomer to the continent. But let's start at the beginning...

Back to the roots
The Clairol Professional salon brand – the brainchild of hair-colour pioneer and Clairol founder Lawrence M. Gelb – was established in the USA in 1951. Gelb, a chemist from New York, discovered Clairol on a visit to Europe in 1931. He was looking for a product that created soft, natural-looking tones, unlike other products of the time, which coated the hair. Gelb took Clairol back to the USA, demonstrating it to a spellbound beauty salon audience. The hairdressers were delighted, Clairol was endorsed, Gelb was in business, and Clairol salon hair colouring services were born.

Does she or doesn't she?
Always on the lookout for ways of making hair colouring easier and faster, Gelb spent seven years researching the breakthrough product Miss Clairol Hair Color Bath, launched in 1950. Within six months of its introduction, the number of women going to salons for permanent hair colouring services surged by over 500 per cent. Now hair was lightened, tinted, conditioned and shampooed in just 20 minutes – a revolutionary step forward.

In 1956, Clairol launched a legendary advertising campaign with the slogan "Does she or doesn't she?" to promote Miss Clairol and remove the stigma attached to hair colouring. The answer to the question was simply: "Hair colour so natural, only her hairdresser knows for sure."

Educating stylists
Larry Gelb understood that professional training was key to ensuring the best possible results. He and his wife Joan travelled the country, presenting and demonstrating techniques. As a result, Clairol Professional helped to boost the expertise of hairdressers, the satisfaction of their clients, and the overall image of the salon industry. As sales grew, so did Clairol Professional's commitment to the salon and the hairdresser. The company trained scores of instructors, published materials distributed free to salons, and held workshops at Clairol Professional schools and clinics across the country. Single-handedly, Clairol Professional taught an entire profession how to colour hair.

Combining expertise with innovation
Innovative professional products and excellence in training have been Clairol Professional's ongoing commitment to the salon industry. Throughout decades of dynamic growth, this commitment has continued, and Clairol Professional gradually expanded its North American portfolio to include care and styling products. Since 2001, Clairol Professional has been part of the Procter & Gamble group.
